If we take a look at society today, we see that if we boil every human motif down, all we are doing is consciously and subconsciously competing with each other. We compete financially, spiritually, sexually, mentally, physically and even emotionally. All of this exhausts our most valuable resources in the process; our brains, our spirits, and bodies. Every other piece of advice is going to tell you to get better sleep, meditate and exercise, which I am for, however, I want to unpack unconventional ways in which we can improve memory by a process of habit elimination. Thanks to the exposure to social media seemingly harmless habits actually curb human memory.

Looking at your phone before getting out of bed

This may sound like such an innocent thing to do since 3 in 5 people go to sleep with their phones close to them. But the problem this poses is that your smartphone is in-hand waiting for you to scroll down a few feeds before you are vertical, making you start your day distracted. My tip is that you avoid looking at your smartphone within the first hour of waking. I do understand that for many it is impossible, although this is a technique tried and tested by the clients of Jim Kwik, a world-leader in learning who has been hired by celebrities and famous professionals alike.

Not being aware of the health of your thought-life

The highest paid jobs these days are ones where people are paid to think. How a person thinks is pivotal to how they behave. Through introspection, one can trace what has influenced or motivated that logic. If anxiety is on a rampage in your mind, how can you expect it to think clearly, let alone have a good memory?

Not using the tool of absurd association

If you have ever watched ‘The mind explained” on Netflix, you have seen Yanjaa Wintersoul tasked with memorizing 500 numbers in 10 minutes, and as you might recall, she does it seamlessly. Her secret? Absurd association. She likens the numbers to places, people, objects and experiences which are already hard-wired into her memory, and as long as they are bizarre enough to make a lasting impression, she associates it with the number. Start doing this with whatever you have to memorize, it will allow your brain to attach something new onto something it already knows.

Forgetting your dreams

There is a great multitude of people who have convinced themselves that they do not dream. The truth is that we all dream, we have just gotten very good at forgetting them. Recording your dreams is definitely a way in which you can start training your memory muscles. Shadow is an application that was developed for this purpose, but you can always journal your dreams on paper. If you feel that this still seems impossible, drink 2 glasses of water before bed, inevitably, you will wake up during the night and your dreams should still be fresh in your mind.
